SMACNA Duct Construction Standards: Pressure Classes, Thickness, Leakage and Editions

Most HVAC drawings in Saudi Arabia carry one line that controls everything on the sheet metal side: ductwork to be built per SMACNA. That line decides gauge, reinforcement, joints and sealing. The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards are the reference behind it. This guide explains what they cover, the pressure classes, thickness, leakage limits and which edition to use.

What the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards Cover

The full title is HVAC Duct Construction Standards: Metal and Flexible, published by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association. It is an ANSI-accredited standard, and many codes adopt it directly.

The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards tell you how to build and hang ductwork that holds its shape and stays sealed. Topics include:

  • Materials and sheet gauges
  • Joints, seams, and reinforcement
  • Hangers and supports
  • Sealing and seal classes
  • Fittings, vanes and dampers
  • Duct liner and flexible duct
  • Testing

The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards are mainly for commercial and institutional work. It covers galvanized and stainless steel, uncoated steel and a limited range of aluminum.

SMACNA Standards for Flexible Duct Installation

A flexible duct requires attention to installation length, routing, support, and compression. Excessive sagging, sharp bends, and unnecessary compression can increase airflow resistance and reduce system performance.

When flexible duct is specified, installers should follow the applicable standard, manufacturer instructions, and project requirements. They should avoid unnecessary bends, provide appropriate support, maintain the required connection and sealing details, and ensure the installed duct does not obstruct access to other building services.

Flexible duct requirements should be checked separately from the requirements for rigid rectangular and round metal ductwork.

SMACNA Duct Construction Standards Pressure Classes

Every duct in the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards is built for a pressure class, which is the static pressure it must withstand. The standards give tables for positive and negative pressure at these classes in inches of water gauge:

Class (in. wg)Class (Pa, approx.)Typical use
1/2125Light low-pressure runs
1250Branches and low-pressure supply
2500Common commercial supply and return
3750Medium-pressure mains
41,000High-velocity mains
61,500High pressure, near fans
102,500Highest class in the standard

Designers often group classes into low pressure (up to 2 in.), medium (up to 6 in.) and high pressure (up to 10 in.). The duct schedule on the drawings tells the fabricator which class applies to each run.

Under the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards, pressure class sets reinforcement spacing and sheet gauge, so a wrong class means a wrong duct.

Rectangular vs. Round Duct Construction Under SMACNA

Rectangular and round ducts differ in geometry, fabrication methods, and structural behavior under pressure. Rectangular ductwork often requires additional reinforcement as panel width increases, while round duct construction distributes pressure more evenly around its circumference.

FactorRectangular ductRound duct
FabricationPanels, seams, and transverse jointsCircular sections and connecting joints
ReinforcementOften influenced by panel width and pressureDepends on diameter, gauge, and pressure
Space requirementsCan fit constrained ceiling layoutsRequires suitable clearance for its diameter
SelectionLayout and coordination needsAirflow design, space, and system requirements

Both configurations must meet the construction requirements for the specified pressure class. The appropriate choice depends on the design, available space, fabrication constraints, and project specifications.

SMACNA Duct Thickness and Gauge

The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards give no single thickness. Gauge depends on the pressure class, duct width and reinforcement spacing, and the tables combine all three.

The current edition covers rectangular widths up to 120 inches in gauges 26 to 16, and round diameters up to 84 inches in gauges 28 to 16. These are the common galvanized gauges and their metric equivalents:

GaugeThickness (mm)
260.55
240.70
220.85
201.00
181.31
161.61

Small, low-pressure ducts use the lighter gauges. Wide or high-pressure ducts need heavier sheet, or lighter sheet with closer reinforcement.

SMACNA Duct Reinforcement Requirements

Duct reinforcement helps prevent sheet metal from deflecting or deforming under positive or negative pressure. Under the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards, reinforcement requirements depend on factors such as duct dimensions, pressure class, sheet thickness, and reinforcement spacing.

Common reinforcement components include external stiffeners, formed sheet metal features, and reinforced joints. The required arrangement should be selected from the applicable construction tables rather than from duct width alone.

During fabrication, contractors should verify that reinforcement details match the approved duct schedule and that supports and connections are suitable for the specified pressure conditions.

SMACNA Duct Hanger and Support Requirements

Duct hangers and supports maintain alignment, limit movement, and transfer the ductwork load to the building structure. Their configuration depends on duct dimensions, construction type, weight, and installation conditions.

Before installation, the project team should verify:

  • Support spacing against the applicable SMACNA construction details.
  • Hanger type and dimensions for the duct size and load.
  • Secure attachment to suitable structural elements.
  • Clearance around insulation, access panels, and other services.
  • Additional support where required by fittings or equipment connections.

The applicable standard tables and approved project drawings should determine the final support arrangement.

SMACNA Duct Leakage and Seal Classes

The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards pair each pressure class with a seal class, which sets how much of the duct must be sealed. Class C seals transverse joints, Class B adds longitudinal seams and Class A adds all wall penetrations.

Acceptable leakage follows a formula: F = CL x P^0.65. F is the maximum leakage in cfm per 100 ft² of duct surface, CL is the leakage class and P is the test pressure in inches of water.

For rectangular metal duct, CL is 16, 8 and 4 for Seal Classes C, B and A. For round metal duct, it is 8, 4 and 2. Some energy codes cap tested ducts at CL 4 or 6.

Leakage is verified by the separate SMACNA HVAC Air Duct Leakage Test Manual, not by the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards themselves.

3rd Edition vs 4th Edition: Which Is the Latest?

The 3rd edition of the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards dates from 2005, and it is listed as ANSI/SMACNA 006-2006. It expanded pressure class tables, added round duct tables up to 96 inches and introduced double-wall construction details.

The 4th edition of the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards, ANSI/SMACNA 006-2020, is the latest published edition. It re-rates rectangular, round, oval and flexible duct constructions up to 10 in. wg.

Notable changes include flat oval tables, spray and aerosol sealants, non-fiberglass liner and updated hanger and flexible duct support rules.

Always build to the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards edition named in your project specification. If it says the 3rd edition, the 4th does not override it unless the consultant approves.

SMACNA Duct Construction Standards PDF: Where to Get It

Searches for a SMACNA Duct Construction Standards pdf, a 3rd edition pdf, a 2005 pdf or the latest edition PDF all lead to the same advice. Buy the official copy of the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards.

The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards are copyrighted. SMACNA sells it as a book or PDF in its online bookstore, and ICC and the ANSI webstore also list it.

Free copies on random sites are often wrong editions, scanned pages or incomplete. Using one on a submittal is a risk, because the consultant can reject work built to an unverified document.

A single licensed copy costs a small fraction of one rejected duct run.

Applying the Standards on Saudi Projects

Check three things from the SMACNA Duct Construction Standards at the start of a project. The edition in the specification, the pressure class for each duct section and the seal class required.

Saudi Building Code mechanical provisions (SBC 501) and the project specification decide what applies. The SMACNA Duct Construction Standards are the fabrication reference under them.

Pre-insulated duct is different. It is normally built under phenolic or fibrous glass duct standards instead, so check which standard the specification names for each duct type.

Al Samman Group has served Saudi projects since 1973, including airports in Abha, Tabuk and Jizan and the Faisaliyah Hotel, under ISO 9001:2015 quality systems.

SMACNA Duct Construction Inspection Checklist

A duct construction inspection checks whether fabricated and installed ductwork matches the approved drawings and specified construction standard. Inspections should take place at suitable stages before defects become difficult to access.

A practical checklist includes:

  • Confirming the specified SMACNA edition and duct pressure class.
  • Checking sheet thickness and material against the approved schedule.
  • Inspecting joints, seams, reinforcement, and connections.
  • Verifying hangers and supports against the applicable details.
  • Checking sealant application and required seal class.
  • Confirming access for dampers, inspection points, and maintenance.
  • Recording nonconformities and verifying corrective actions.

The inspection requirements should be agreed with the consultant and coordinated with the project’s quality assurance procedures.
